Agricultural landscapes in tropical regions often consist of a mosaic (马赛克图)of different types of land use.Yet little is known about how people make use of these different lecosystems, with their particular plant communities.Researchers from Madagascar carried out a Malagasy research project at the University of Gottingen. They talked with 320 households and asked them about their use and the benefits of the main types of land.
When considering biodiversity, forests often get the most attention.But-this research shows that rural households use a wide range of plant species and services provided by many mearby ecosystem types.285 plant species, almost half of which are found only in Madagascar, are used for food, feed for animals, medicine, construction and basketwork. The study shows that each of the land-use types provides a unique set of ecosystem services for rural households. The results were published in the journal Ambio.
The researchers chose six types of land:old-growth forests, small forest plots, vanilla (香草) agroforests, woody fallows(休耕地),herbaceous fallows and rice fields. The interviews show that old-growth forests and forest plots are important for water regulation. Fallow land and vanilla agroforests provide food, medicine and animal feed.People collect the most plants from woody fallow areas for varying purposes, which were previously regarded as useless. In contrast, they use plants from forest plots for building and basketwork. Multiple land-use types are thus complementary (互补的)for providing ecosystem services to local communities, with fallow lands being particularly important.
The findings are important to nature conservation:“It is important not just to consider the conservation of the impressive diversity of species on Madagascar, but also the benefits of this species richness for the local population, when designing conservation and development strategies,”says first author Dr.Estelle Raveloaritiana, whose PhD research was part of this project.
