While other artists might use watercolors or oil paints,Mbongeni Buthelezi uses wasteplastics to create portraits(肖像)at his studio in Booysens,Johannesburg. His medium isthe plastic litter he collects from local rubbish dumps and city streets.“Animals are dyingand fish in the ocean are dying—because of this material. It is we humans that need to takeresponsibility,"said the 56-year-old artist.Over the past three decades,Buthelezi has beenusing his works to both highlight and address the issue.
Buthelezi's use of waste wasn't always in defense of the environment. He first beganusing plastic litter because he couldn't afford expensive oil paints while studying at thecollege. Then,he developed a unique technique of using an electric heat gun that producedhot air to melt(熔化)the plastic.According to Buthelezi, this is more environmentallyfriendly than using flames to melt plastic and doesn't release noxious smoke and gases intothe atmosphere.
His artistic process involves melting down pieces of plastic onto a thick plasticbackground, often in more than one layer(层)to create complex textures and colorcombinations. He c alls the process simple and random, but believes that the final piecesspeak for themselves.“Im interested in finding the details in the painting, but also see thewhole story as you view it from afar,"he says.
Buthelezi also uses his art as a vehicle to tell important stories about South Africa andthe dificulties of life in South Africa's townships. In 2010,online magazine Live Out Loudsaid his art“reflects humanity's often harmful impact on the environment, but his originaluse of waste objects to picture an often forgotten group of people truly sets him apart".Hispaintings have been exhibited in South Africa,as well as Germany, the US,and Holland, for years.
